{"id":252,"date":"2011-04-29T20:01:30","date_gmt":"2011-04-30T03:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arcdream.com\/home\/?p=252"},"modified":"2011-04-29T20:01:30","modified_gmt":"2011-04-30T03:01:30","slug":"why-we-fight-willpower-rewards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcdream.com\/home\/2011\/04\/why-we-fight-willpower-rewards\/","title":{"rendered":"Why We Fight: Willpower Rewards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Shane Ivey, (c) 2009.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Willpower is a crucial currency in both\u00a0<em><a id=\"link_0\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcdream.com\/zencart\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=4&amp;products_id=10\">Godlike<\/a><\/em> and\u00a0<em><a id=\"link_1\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcdream.com\/wildtalents\">Wil<\/a><\/em><em><a id=\"link_2\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcdream.com\/zencart\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=5&amp;products_id=5\">d Talents<\/a><\/em>. In\u00a0<em>Godlike<\/em>, where it\u2019s simply called Will, you earn it most often for defeating enemy Talents and for saving your allies\u2019 lives. In\u00a0<em>Wild Talents<\/em> it is fueled by motivations, the Loyalties and Passions that define each character. In both games Willpower reflects morale and characters\u2019 ability to persevere despite obstacles and threats. The GM awards it when a character achieves critical goals. The amount of the award depends on the scope of the achievement.<\/p>\n<p>The standard Willpower award for a significant accomplishment in the game is one point: You get a point of Willpower for a single act of heroic risk that succeeds, or for spectacular performance under stress (in other words, rolling a set at height 10 with normal dice).<\/p>\n<p>For a more substantial achievement, a couple of new guidelines might be useful.<\/p>\n<p>First, award a number of Willpower points based on how substantially the achievement supports one of your motivations\u2014its <strong>SIGNIFICANCE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If the achievement lasts beyond the current round, award bonus Willpower points for\u00a0<strong>PERSISTENCE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If the achievement benefits a large number of characters, award bonus Willpower points for\u00a0<strong>SCOPE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>AWARDS FOR SIGNIFICANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Willpower: <\/strong>A minor but direct benefit or advantage to one of your motivations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 to 3 Willpower: <\/strong>A moderate benefit or advantage to one of your motivations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 to 5 Willpower: <\/strong>A major benefit or advantage to one of your motivations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>AWARDS FOR PERSISTENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>+0 Willpower:<\/strong> Immediate benefit\u2014the current scene.<\/p>\n<p><strong>+1 Willpower:<\/strong> Short-term benefit\u2014the current game session.<\/p>\n<p><strong>+2 Willpower:<\/strong> Long-term benefit\u2014multiple game sessions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>+3 Willpower: <\/strong>Permanent benefit\u2014it will last until other events change it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>AWARDS FOR SCOPE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>+0 Willpower:<\/strong> It benefits only you or a small group of characters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>+1 Willpower:<\/strong> It benefits a town or organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>+2 Willpower:<\/strong> It benefits a city or a large organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>+3 Willpower:<\/strong> It benefits an entire country or civilization.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>WILLPOWER PENALTIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just as you can earn Willpower by fulfilling your motivations, you can lose it\u2014sometimes a lot of it\u2014by failing one of your motivations. A catastrophic failure calls for a Trauma Check in\u00a0<em>Wild Talents<\/em>, or a Cool + Mental Stability roll in\u00a0<em>Godlike<\/em>. That\u2019s what you get when you try to save a buddy\u2019s life but he gets blown away in your arms, or when terrorists launch a devastating strike on the hometown where you\u2019ve invested a chunk of your Base Will as a motivation.<\/p>\n<p>If the disaster is not quite that disastrous, take another look at the Significance, Scope and Persistence numbers. But this time they add up to a penalty.
