minimum age to play Monsters

Postby ristarr on Mon Feb 08, 2010 6:35 pm

I was listening to RPPR's Santa Claus Reign AP podcast ( http://slangdesign.com/rppr/2009/01/act ... nta-claus/ ) and thought kids would really enjoy saving Santa Claus and Christmas.

What age do you think is the youngest to be able to play Monsters. I read Shane's post about his kids ( http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=382495 ) and it sounds like it went well. Would a 6 yr old be too young? I am thinking the attention span would be the major problem. Of course the story could be an issue. Any "combat" would have to be very comedic I imagine. Would it be easier with just 1 kid and a couple or three adult players? Just wondering.

Thanks

For a kid that young you really need to handle all the rules stuff yourself and just get them to say what kinds of things they want to do. The real trick is in saying "No, that doesn't work" when the rules don't cooperate with the kid's imagination. You have to have limits since it's a game, but you don't want to frustrate the young player. It takes patience. Oh, and keep the game short and focused. A kid that yound probably won't want to sit still focusing on it for hours on end.

The youngest I've run it for was my youngest son when he was eight.
